Hintergrundinformation
The implementation of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Program for the Sofala Province, has been supported by the Austrian Development Agency since 2018. Between 2018 and 2021 funded interventions focused on the districts of Nhamatanda, Buzi, Cheringoma and Machanga. The independent evaluation of the programme confirmed the importance of ADC support to improve access to clean water and sanitation in Sofala. Recommendations in the evaluation report included improving quality assurance of supply and repair services of the private sector and strengthening procurement processes and the need for more reliable information systems on the functional status of WASH infrastructure. The second phase of the programme covering the period 2022-2025 has incorporated these recommendations in its design. The districts of Marromeu and Caia, with a total population of around 340,000, were selected as implementation areas as communities in these areas have hardly benefited from investments in public infrastructure since 2013 due to political and military instability.
