In Uganda, local media, and specifically local radio stations, as main sources of information for the vast majority of rural population across the country, are key to monitor democratic processes, ensure accountability and support justice and reconciliation. This has gained special importance in post-conflict Northern Uganda. At present, however, few local radio stations have the capacity to play a meaningful role in the democratic and reconciliation processes.

Building up media's capacity to promote good governance, justice and reconciliation in rural Uganda is a BBC World Service Trust initiative that aims to provide targeted capacity-building to nine radio stations in rural areas of Uganda, including three stations in post-conflict Northern Uganda, to improve their coverage of local governance, transitional justice and peace-building processes.

The overall aim of the project is to increase participation and public awareness among local audiences regarding their role, rights and responsibilities in the governance, justice and reconciliation debate. In total, audiences of 3 radio stations in Acholi sub-region shall be provided with relevant and targeted information and a platform to interact directly with their local authorities. Moreover, 9 radio stations and 30 local government officials in rural Uganda shall be strengthened to communicate good governance, justice and reconciliation issues effectively.

These results shall be achieved by training local journalists and government representatives on how to interact effectively with the media. Furthermore, media professionals shall be provided with the necessary knowledge, skills and motivation needed to report responsibly on local governance, transitional justice and peace-building issues.

The project fits into the overall goal of the Peace Recovery and Development Plan for Northern Uganda (PRDP) by contributing towards its strategic objective of focussing on peace building and reconciliation through local media.
