Insecurity due to the conflict, the lack of physical infrastructure, low levels of education in South Sudan and lack of funds for local mine action NGOs have combined to produce a situation where there is no credible, technically proficient local mine action NGO that is operationally independent of an international NGO or commercial company.


The Sudan Integrated Mine Action Service (SIMAS) was one of the earliest mine action NGOs established to provide mine action support to the communities of Southern Sudan. Like many southern Sudanese NGOs, SIMAS was headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, however with support provided by FSD, it will complete the move to Juba in South Sudan by the end of this year.


The aim of this project, which is jointly funded by the Swiss government and the Austrian Development cooperation, is therefore to provide capacity building support to SIMAS in order to provide a local mine action NGO in South Sudan that is:


a. Fully registered with the local authorities;

b. Administratively self sufficient;

c. Technically competent, and

d. Fully accredited for mine clearance operations.


In pursuing these aims, the project will provide a Capacity Building Adviser to SIMAS for a period of three months and an experienced Technical Mine action Adviser for the period of 11 months. This support will be complemented by provision of the necessary technical equipment and vehicles required to support the mine action activities of a multi-skilled local Mine Clearance Team.

  • Modalität: definiert die Art der Hilfe (z.B: Sektorbudgethilfe, Kernbeiträge an multilaterale Institutionen, Projekthilfe, Technische Assistenz (personelle Hilfe), Bildungsarbeit im Inland, etc.)
  • Sektor: bezeichnet den wirtschaftlichen oder sozialen Sektor des Partnerlandes, welcher mit dem Projekt/Programm unterstützt wird.
  • Tied/Untied: Ungebundene (untied) Hilfe ermöglicht dem Projektpartner im Entwicklungsland - unter Befolgung der lokalen Beschaffungsregeln - freie Entscheidung über die Herkunftsländer im Zuge der Beschaffung von Dienstleistungen und Waren. Gebundene (tied) Hilfe verknüpft die Hilfsleistung auf die Beschaffung aus dem Geberland oder aus einem eingeschränkten Kreis von Ländern.
