Hintergrundinformation
Intense violence in northern and, increasingly, eastern Burkina Faso have caused injuries and deaths. Thousands of people have fled their homes, and require food, shelter and other essentials. Infrastructure, already overstretched, cannot cope with this additional strain: this constricts health-care and other basic services. Access to clean water and sanitation facilities, and knowledge of good hygiene practices are lacking; malaria, diarrhoea and other diseases are prevalent. In addition, climatic shocks, such as drought, have affected the supply of food in areas of northern Burkina Faso. Some residents, and Malian refugees who cannot return home because of the security situation there, rely on herding for sustenance: the prevalence of livestock diseases, worsened by past drought, has thinned their herds.
The ICRC Abidjan regional delegation is present in Burkina Faso, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Togo since 1992. The delegation focuses on responding to the protection and assistance needs of people, including refugees, affected by armed conflicts and other situations of violence in the greater region and provides logistical support for other ICRC delegations in West Africa. In 2019, the ICRC increased the number of staff at its mission in Burkina Faso and will extend its presence to Djibo and Fada.
