Hintergrundinformation

Currently, an estimated 3.3 million people in Burkina Faso are estimated to face acute food insecurity. Since 2018, the security situation in the country has deteriorated markedly, with Burkina Faso's military and security forces engaged with armed groups in the country and also across the borders in neighboring Mali and Niger. Hostilities have intensified in 2021 - further exacerbating the food crisis that has been developing over the previous years. The persistent drought in the country has markedly affected water and food supplies. Agricultural production has been disrupted by climate shocks and fighting. The security situation has led to people fleeing their homes, with roughly 1.4 million internally displaced people (IDPs) now in the country. Both IDPs and host communities are often without sufficient amounts of water, again related to climate-induced scarcity and dilapidated infrastructure. This further affects crops and livestock. The dire living conditions have given rise to health problems among displaced people with malnutrition, diarrheal diseases, respiratory infections and malaria on the rise. Medical care is not readily available, as many health facilities are under-sourced or affected by the fighting. Health workers and patients have also been attacked or caught in the crossfire between factions. The security situation makes it difficult to deliver humanitarian aid in some conflict affected areas, however, the ICRC is making efforts to negotiate safe access with all relevant actors.
