Hintergrundinformation

Ethiopia has experienced rising political and ethnic tensions that have boiled over in many areas of the country. The regions of most concern are currently Oromia, where armed violence between government and armed insurgence has escalated, and Tigray, which has seen extensive fighting since November 2020. The latter has led to a humanitarian crisis with around a million people affected and over 800.000 fleeing to neighbouring countries, particularly Eritrea, Somalia and South Sudan.

The current fighting disrupts the sources of food or livelihood of residents, returnees and IDPs. The fighting has also disrupted harvest, and restrictions by Covid-19 pandemic have massively affected the economy. This led to a rise in food prices to levels of beyond the reach of many people. The water systems are damaged due to the fighting. Health facilities are overwhelmed by influxes of wounded patients and IDPs while also having to deal with COVID-19, making the situation even more difficult. Many people have lost contact with their families because of the hostilities or because of migration. Children who have become separated from their families are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence, forced recruitment and other abuses.
