Hintergrundinformation
The first case of COVID-19 in Iraq was confirmed in late February 2020. Since then the disease has rapidly spread. Amidst multiple political, economic, security and social challenges, the Government has implemented measures to contain and prevent the further spread of the virus, including boosting the health system in Iraq, enacting curfews, and implementing travel restrictions across domestic and international routes. Despite these measures, the cases of COVID-19 continue to increase, with a recent spike experienced in mid-May. UNDP, at the request of the Government of Iraq (GoI), alongside WHO’s immediate response plan, developed its programmatic offer of support to strengthen GoI's readiness, response and recovery systems and strategies, in the short and medium term.
In addition to the humanitarian activities coordinated by OCHA, the UN RC/HC requested UNDP to establish a COVID-19 Programmatic Response Working Group to elaborate the UNCT's collective COVID 19 recovery strategy, outside the humanitarian response.
