Contribution to the UNHCR Emergency Response for the Iraq Situation

Since the start of 2014, violence and conflict have caused unprecedented internal displacement in Iraq. The UN now estimates that 1.8 million Iraqis have been internally displaced (IDPs) and are facing dire humanitarian consequences. This appeal outlines UNHCR’s response to the needs of 1.8 million Iraqi IDPs and up to 150,000 Iraqi refugees in surrounding countries.
UNHCR’s main targets for 2014 for Iraq are to respond to needs in the following 3 areas:
1) Protection to persons of concern, which includes:
a) improving or maintaining the registration of IDPs
b) increasing the access to legal assistance –out of the total 1,8 mio. IDPs, more than 37.000 are actually targeted to receive legal support.
c) protection of children - Identification and response to the needs of separated and/or unaccompanied children;
d) reducing the risk of SGBV and provide psychosocial support to survivors of violence.
e) Promote a Peaceful co-existence with local communities promoted:
2) Addressing basic needs, which includes:
a) Shelter and infrastructure established, improved and maintained:
¿¿provide 40,000 emergency shelters (tents) provided
Population has sufficient basic and domestic items:
¿¿120,000 IDP families (600,000 individuals) will receive sufficient basic non-food items
¿¿60,000 families are supported through winterization assistance
Services for people with specific needs strengthened:
¿¿60,000 displaced families are assisted through cash assistance
Support to governance bodies maintained and strengthened:
¿¿local authorities are assisted to establish and maintain twenty IDP
3) Logistics and operations support:
¿¿strengthening coordination and operations management
¿¿optimizing logistics and supply to serve operational needs.
