Countries are able to collect, analyse and report data on all SDG 6 global indicators and decision-makers at all levels to maximize benefits from the holistic use of monitoring data for policy making.

Erwartete Ergebnisse

Improved capacity for collecting and analyzing data for the SDG 6 indicators. At least 100 countries will experience improved water and sanitation policymaking based on evidence provided with support of the IMI-SDG6.

Ultimately, this initiative will help to improve drinking water and sanitation services, reduce pollution and enhance quality of water bodies, will encourage more efficient and integrated use of water, and restore and protect water-related ecosystems.

In particular, these outputs will ensure the achievement of the project objective/outcome:

- Monitoring framework and responsibilities refined and maintained for each SDG 6 global indicator including gender contextualisation as appropriate.

- Data obtained and validated from countries for each SDG 6 global indicator

- Progress reporting conducted for each SDG 6 global indicator

- Country use of SDG 6 indicator reporting as a platform for refining national targets and informed planning and management of water resources facilitated.

- Capacity and processes for technically sound and coordinated monitoring, reporting, data analysis and use across SDG 6 at the country level are improved.

- Policy- and decision-makers are informed and engaged regarding the status and interdependencies of SDG 6 targets and how monitoring links to implementation.

- Coordination, advisory, and learning mechanisms in place for monitoring of SDG 6.

Zielgruppe

The target group is individuals who are responsible for generating data and tracking progress towards the SDG targets: various line ministries, departments and National Statistical Offices. During the current phase, it is expected that approximately 6,000 national technical experts will benefit from the IMI-SDG6.

It is estimated that an additional 7,500 practitioners will benefit from this process, and gender aspects will be strengthened in these processes.

The ultimate beneficiaries will be all UN Member States and their citizens, who will benefit from effective national programmes, aimed at achieving sustainable water and sanitation-related targets.

These beneficiaries will include all members of society, leaving no one behind.

Maßnahmen

Selected activities are:

1.1 Reviewing and refining indicator methodologies, including as appropriate, disaggregation and gender contextualisation

1.2 Developing guidelines, instruments and tools for data collection, including as appropriate, disaggregation and gender contextualisation

1.3 Exploring additional sources of data and complementary indicators

1.4 Building networks of country focal points

2.1 Disseminating methodologies and support tools

2.2 Developing and providing virtual training/consultation/ advisory support

2.3 Developing and providing face-to-face training/consultation/advisory support

3.1 Data collecting and validating through interactive consultative process

4.1 Analysis of data for each indicator and submission to UN Statistics Division

4.2 Preparation and publication of reports using data for each indicator

4.3 Outreach using reports and results of analysis

5.1 Developing briefs and tools for the use of data at the country and regional level

5.3 Supporting countries in the use of data for policy including, as appropriate, disaggregation and gender contextualisation

6.2 Provide support to countries on cross-cutting and institutional issues including the establishment of inter-sectoral monitoring teams including, as appropriate, disaggregation and gender contextualisation

6.3 Support cross-country learning and collaboration

7.1 Maintain and update SDG 6 Data Portal

7.4 Develop and implement a strategy for communicating with policy-makers and other target groups at all levels

Hintergrundinformation

SDG 6 seeks to “ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”. 11 indicators track progress towards SDG 6. The IMI-SDG6 aims to accelerate the achievement of the eight targets under SDG 6. It will do this by increasing capacity at national level for reporting on progress towards SDG 6, and by ensuring decision-makers at all levels maximize benefits from the holistic use of monitoring data for policymaking.
