Good/best-practice guidance on private sector development (PSD) advocated and disseminated by DCED is duly incorporated in technical cooperation and other works, contributing to effective interventions.

Erwartete Ergebnisse

DCED Annual Meeting 2019 successfully co-hosted (ADA and UNIDO) in Vienna. The topic suggested by ADA/UNIDO for the Thematic Day on 13 June 2019 – “Private sector development in the age of digitalization and the ‘great convergence’ of technologies” – promises to meet with significant interest among the DCED membership and will allow to highlight Austria’s engagement with issues around the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Zielgruppe

About 120 representatives from fellow DCED member agencies and DCED organs (Executive Committee, DCED Secretariat, DCED Working Groups) will be the direct target group of this intervention. All entities/individuals benefiting from state-of-the-art (best practice) technical cooperation (TC) assistance delivered by or with the support of DCED member agencies and/or the DCED Secretariat during the project’s run-time will constitute indirect beneficiaries.

Maßnahmen

The meeting structure will be as follows:

Tuesday, 11 June & Wednesday, 12 June 2019: Meetings of DCED Working Groups, venue: Vienna International Centre (VIC).

Thursday, 13 June 2019: Thematic Day, venue: Christoph Leitl Lounge/WKO

Friday, 14 June 2019: Business Day (members only), venue: VIC

The Thematic Day will address the topic “Private sector development in the age of digitalization and the ‘great convergence’ of technologies” and comprise a mix of keynotes, panel contributions and interactive sessions (storytelling, open space) that would be guided by the following overall thrust: Highlight the disruptive potential of digitalization and convergence of technologies driving the fourth industrial revolution: speed of change; widespread implications; systemic impact. Share good practices and lessons learned among partners that have already launched initiatives for addressing opportunities and challenges of the digital era and rapid technological progress.

Identify implications for collective action at all levels and for development agencies (notably, DCED members) in particular that seek to strengthen the private sector and foster digitalization and job creation in various geographies.

Review country preparedness for the future: many partner countries face a significant digital divide and lack behind in the uptake of digital technologies or in investment in new technology learning, innovation and development.

Share examples of successful partnership schemes between development agencies and private sector in addressing the uptake of new technologies or skill gaps. Create a common understanding on the role of DCED.

Hintergrundinformation

Founded in 1979, the Donor Committee for Enterprise Development (DCED) has sought to enhance efforts of donor and development agencies that pursue private sector development (PSD) as a means to create jobs and economic opportunities and hence as a way out of poverty. The DCED’s members – funding and inter-governmental agencies – share the vision of making PSD more effective by (i) Sharing experience between agencies and field programmes; (ii) Developing and disseminating knowledge and guidance on good practice in PSD; and (iii) Communicating evidence on results in PSD.
