Development of Sustainable Energy for Rangelands - DESER II
Kurzbeschreibung:
Projektziel
Institutions from different countries in the Himalaya-Hindukush region - active within the Austrian funded regional rangelands programme - have identified the lack of energy sources for people living off these rangelands as a main problem for livelihood, but also as a main cause of rangeland degradation, as existing resources are over-utilized.
This programme aims to strengthen various renewable energy sources and make them available to the mountain populations of the Himalaya-Hindukush region (Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, India and China). The objective is to provide sustainable and affordable access to sufficient energy sources for daily needs (cooking, heating, electricity requirements), without further degrading the fragile rangelands, which are the source of livelihoods.
In the second phase of this programme ICIMOD
- disseminates best practice technologies from phase I to households (at least 2000 systems)
- identifies new tested and demonstrated energy supply options
- updates the knowledge base on sustainable energy options for the rangelands
- elaborates a study report on micro finance schemes for modern energy systems in the rangelands
- enhances capacities of relevant stakeholders
