Diabetes clinic for Pregnant Women at Holy Family Hospital, Bethlehem
The project aims at reducing the complications in high risk pregnancies that are caused by diabetes during pregnancy. By creating a diabetic outpatient clinic for pregnant women at the Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem, Palestinian diabetic pregnant women will be provided with a comprehensive care and targeted education to meet their specific needs.
The target group includes all pregnant women with diabetes whether Type I or II Diabetes or Gestational diabetes. Pregnant Women from Bethlehem and surrounding areas, as well as from refugee camps - the Holy Family Hospital also acts as a referral center for UNRWA - and Bedouin settlements will be able to make use of the clinic. Outreach activities will also target women in the areas of Hebron, AbuDis and Ramallah.
The Holy Family Hospital aims to achieve this reduction in diabetes-related pregnancy risks by:
¢ Offering consultations with specifically-trained health staff;
¢ Providing advise and guidance on proper diet for the pregnant women;
¢ Screening for diabetes through relevant medical tests;
¢ Monitoring risk-patients (preganant women with hign blood sugar levels) through regular ultrasound of the foetus, issuing of proper medication and if necessary, temporarily admitting women to the inpatient clinic.
