Emergency and Recovery Health Assistance for earthquake affected communities in Sindhupalchok

The overall project goal is to improve the health conditions and resilience among earthquake affected communities in Sindhupalchok District of Nepal.
Erwartete Ergebnisse
The specific objectives are
• to provide improved access to primary healthcare services for displaced population and earthquake-affected communities and
• to create increased awareness and knowledge on sanitation, diseases outbreak and disaster risk management for displaced population and quake-affected communities.
Zielgruppe
The project will be implemented in two Village Development Committees (VDCs) in Sindhupalchok, one of the hardest hit districts in Nepal. The project targets the entire population of the 2 VDCs Pipaldanda (3.371 individuals/787 households) and Bhotechaur (4.752 individuals/1.074 households). Thus a total of 8.123 individuals/1.861 households will benefit from an improved access to primary healthcare services and improved water and sanitation conditions. Among those households there will be a special focus on 561 pregnant and lactating mothers and on 528 mothers with children under 2 who will additionally benefit from the distribution of clean delivery kits and baby hygiene kits as well as from regular counselling, workshops and referrals through the female community health volunteers. Finally, 34 health staff will directly benefit from disaster risk reduction (DRR) related trainings as well as from the hygiene promotion campaigns in the 2 VDCs.
Maßnahmen
The goal of the project will be achieved through: reconstructing 2 health posts and equipping them with appropriate sanitation and water facilities as well as with medical equipment; establishing 6 spaces for women, adolescents and young children (WAYCS); trainings on post-disaster health needs, maternal and child health, hygiene issues as well as on disaster preparedness and risk management.
Hintergrundinformation
On the 25th of April 2015 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. Sindhupalchok had been identified as the most affected district, where a majority of healthcare outposts have been damaged. Of the 79 health facilities functional prior to the earthquake, 68 have been fully or partially damaged leaving an estimated 220,559 people in urgent need of health care.
