Enhancing Safety and Security of Human Right Defenders in Africa

Projektziel
Improved accountability, rule of law, and redress in Africa and institutionalized meaningful participation of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) and other social movements in all aspects and levels of policy development, programming and implementation of international standards
Erwartete Ergebnisse
1.Improved safe and enabling environment for HRDs in Africa to efficiently participate in and promote accountability, rule of law, good governance and protection of human rights for sustainable development
2.Improved networking, best practice sharing and enhanced capacities of HRDs to utilize innovative tools and approaches to monitor and report adequately violations of human rights and progress made by states.
3.Strengthened advocacy and policy dialogue with state actors, regional and international human rights mechanisms.
Zielgruppe
Direct beneficiaries: Five (5) sub-regional networks of human rights defenders, thirteen (13) national human rights defenders Coalitions/Networks, individual at-risk human rights defenders or organizations. A specific focus will be paid to actions in the following countries: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Republic of South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania.
The project is anticipated to directly benefit 450 HRDs and at least 30 HRD organizations in all its activities
Indirect beneficiaries: most at risk HRDs including women human rights defenders, HRDs working in conflict areas and under restrictive laws, HRDs working on business and human rights, HRDs working on environmental issues, journalists fighting against impunity and corruption in Africa.
Maßnahmen
- Provision of emergency protection to 10 HRDs at risk, hosting of 14 HRDs at risk in Hub Cities, financial and technical assistance for enhanced security and other capacities for 150 HRDs
- Strategic litigation for cases of 10 HRDs who experienced violations of their rights
- Observation of 5 trials on the continent and dissemination of reports thereof
- Capacity development: 10 HDRs organizations developed and use security policies and protocols, 10 HRDs organizations use secure and encrypted, mentoring of 15 HRDs organizations
- Advocacy work at international level: participation in international meetings to review state reports, and meetings held with special mechanisms and special procedures (UN and AU level), various networking activities
- Public awareness raising through social media presence and newsletter dissemination, recognition of outstanding HRDs (African Shield Awards)
- 4 research-based reports tracking trends and changing situations for HRDs in Africa
Hintergrundinformation
The East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project (DefendDefenders), is a Uganda based NGO seeking to strengthen the work of HRDs and to enhance awareness on human rights work. DefendDefenders serves as the Secretariat of a network representing more than 75 HRD organizations in Africa.
