Flood Recovery in Kashmir, AJK, Pakistan 2010

The worst floods to hit Pakistan in decades have affected more than 20 million people. Latest assessments estimate that up to nearly 2 million houses have been damaged or destroyed and that some 70 per cent of the country has been affected.
The Austrian Red Cross together with its partner the Pakistan Red Crescent Society aims to contribute to the provision of coordinated multi-sector relief and rehabilitation to the victims of the floods.
The aim of this project is to provide shelter solutions and ensure safety, health and livelihood among 15.000 most vulnerable flood-affected people in three districts (Muzaffarabad, Neelum (Valley) and Bagh) of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
Activities to reach this objective include:
- the distribution of shelter kits and of sheets of corrugated iron for construction of shelters;
- provision of access to safe and clean drinking water, latrines as well as awareness of how to practice safe hygiene and basic first aid among the population;
- increasing the livelihood opportunities of the flood affected population through distribution of seeds and tools and capacity development in community gardening;
- strengthening the capacity of the local Pakistan Red Crescent Society's Branch in AJK in planning / implementing relief and rehabilitation projects.
