Flood Response Moldova: Assistance to Vulnerable Famlies and their Children

As a result of severe floods that affected Moldova at the end of July / beginning of August 2008, more than 50 localities from 22 regions in the country were flooded, with the floods also affecting houses, health and educational facilities, roads, and protection dikes. It is estimated that a total of about 25.000 people were affected.
The UN Response to the Floods in Moldova is designed to address the recovery needs created by the floods. One of the components of the UN Flood Response is the implementation of the "Recovery Assistance to vulnerable families and their children", under the responsibility of UNICEF Moldova. The main outputs of this project will be:
¢ Avoiding an increase in the number of school drop-outs in affected regions
¢ Improved quality of psycho-social assistance and decreased post-traumatic symptoms in children
¢ Avoiding water-borne diseases in affected areas
The direct beneficiaries of this component will be the evacuated persons (7.950), the children under 6 years of age (220) and the children attending school in the affected areas (1.800). The indirect beneficiary is the general population of the affected villages.
The target communities are located in Briceni and Stefan-Voda rayons and the Transnistrian region.
The total budget of the UN Flood Response Appeal is 2.3 mio USD; the total budget of the Unicef component to which the Austrian Development Cooperation contributes with this funding agreement is 667.680 USD.
