Hintergrundinformation

In Moldova one in three people of retirement age are living in absolute poverty, most of them being women, having a 8 years longer life expectancy than men. Older people in rural areas are especially affected not only by emigration, leaving them alone in deserted villages, but also by an increased inflation up to 30% directly impacting the households. The minimum pensions of around 100 EUR are not enough to cover subsistence needs and many older people also do not have access to them as they worked in the informal sector and lack knowledge on how to acquire the documentation needed. Furthermore, most of them have no access to health services due to lack of money and transport. This project directly contributes to Moldova’s current National Development Strategy “European Moldova 2030”, especially by reducing poverty and strengthening access to healthcare.
