Discussion on separate and joint concerns in the EU and AU will contribute to a better understanding of the position of the other side and to a joint formulation of policies common to both partners. By doing so, the project contributes to the informed Austrian position for the next EU-Africa Summit in 2017

Erwartete Ergebnisse

As an outcome of the project recommendations and proposals for Austrian and European policy makers addressing challenges in the context of peace and security, migration and governance are made, including a critical analysis of positions presented.

Zielgruppe

A total of 100 experts and decision makers are targeted to share experiences and deepen their knowledge on pertienent issues of EU-Africa relations. The beneficiaries include Austrian ministry officials, NGO representatives, academics; African personalities; EU officials and repre-sentatives of African and European think tanks

Partners in this endevour are the Foreign Ministry (Department II.6), the National Defence Academy / Institute for Peace Support and Conflict Management (IFK), the Vienna Institute for Int’l Dialogue and Coopera-tion and the Austrian Development Agency. Further (invited) partners are on the international level like ECDPM, or from the African Diaspora like VAS.

Maßnahmen

3 workshops are planned: on peace and security (1), migration and development (2), governance, democracy and the rule of law (3).

Results of the workshops will be documented published for media and the public

Hintergrundinformation

The next EU-AU summit (2017) will focus, among others, on

- Peace and Security

- Migration

- Common Values and the Rule of Law.

These issues are important for Austrian Development Cooperation, but also for key Austrian stake-holders in EU-African relations – ministries, university experts, civil society (NGO’s).

Foreign ministry will be driving the preparations for the next AU/EU summit, and, together with other concerned ministries (MoD, MoI) welcomes inputs permitting a better Austrian positioning in the official meetings. All stakeholders agree also that a more systematic information in Austria is necessary to obtain a better public understanding of Austrian/EU initiatives concerning Africa. Fi-nally, the EU commission has expressed keen interest in such member-states centred initiatives. The project has been developed against this backgroud.
