HOPE for the People Affected by the Sahel Crisis - emergency relief for Tuareg refugees and livelihood support for local pastoralists
Kurzbeschreibung:
Projektziel
On 2 March 2012, the Government of Burkina Faso officially declared that the country is facing a critical food and nutrition crisis, and called on the national and international solidarity for support. 170 rural communities of the Région du Nord, Région du Centre Nord, Région de l’Est and especially the Région du Sahel are currently at risk of food insecurity.
The situation is aggravated by the influx of 22.974 Tuareg refugees from Mali (status as of: 20.3.2012), most of them (20,836) arriving in the Région du Sahel with their cattle (in total: 11.500 head of cattle, 20.320 small livestock (sheep and goats), 834 donkeys and 638 camels.
These large numbers of Tuareg (for a small country like BF) seeking protection with their herds, which are their only livelihood and form part of their identity in the already food insecure and drought-stricken regions risk to further exacerbate the already volatile food security situation of the rural host communities.
The aim of this project thus is to:
1. Ensure the access of the affected refugee population to food and NFI in order to sustain and safeguard their lives, health and livelihood.
2. Strengthen the resilience of refugees as well as of the local pastoralists and agro-pastoralists to cope with the current climate change based crisis in order to prevent a further increase in malnutrition rates and to support the livelihoods of the affected or potentially food-insecure households for the time after the drought.
The proposed action will benefit 17,500 people in the project area, i.e. 2.750 Tuareg refugees (total population of Camp Damba) and 15.000 local (agro-) pastoralists of the Commune rurale de Nassoumbou.
The project is financed by funds from the Austrian Foreign Disaster Aid Fund.
