Humanitarian Assistance and Protection for Eritrean Refugees in Ethiopia

By the beginning of 2010, Ethiopia has hosted over 125,000 refugees mainly from Somalia, Eritrea and Sudan. This project benefits Eritrean refugees and aims to provide humanitarian assistance in the sectors of Child Protection and Health Care for the approx. 18.000 adults and 9.000 children who comprise the Eritrean refugee population accommodated in two refugee camps of in northern Ethiopia.
With regard to health care, the main activities undertaken include (but are not limited to):
" Provision of Primary Health Care including pediatrics, immunizations and treatment of survivors of sexual gender based violence.
" Provision of healthcare training to both healthcare staff and refugees in both camps.
" Provision of quality medical and psycho-social care facilities and services to people living with HIV, as well as HIV and STI-preventive services to the refugee population at large,
In the area of child protection, targeting particularly the large number of unaccompanied minors, some of the major activities include:
" Establishing a children's centre, Oasis for Kids.
" Identify, verify and follow up on cases of children at risk in the community (outreach
programme).
" Setting up child care arrangements (foster and group-care) in collaboration with partners and the refugee community
" Establishing a Childcare Emergency Shelter for children at immediate risk of harm in the camp.
