Humanitarian Assistance to Gaza: Support to the ICRC Appeal for Israel, the Occupied and Autonomous Territories 2009

The project falls under the ICRC 2009 Appeal for Israel and the Occupied and Autonomous Territories. As part of the program in that region and in response to the armed conflict in the Gaza Strip in December 2008/January 2009, the ICRC is carrying out humanitarian assistance and protection activities in Gaza.
The Austrian contribution serves to support this humanitarian response in Gaza, aiming to achieve two key objectives:
1. People in the Gaza Strip have access to essential services and enjoy a safe and healthy environment.
Activities carried out by the project partner to achieve this include:
¢ provision of water to communities, repair of water treatment facilities
¢ provision of emergency shelter
¢ provision of food and non-food relief items
2. The wounded and sick are evacuated to health facilities and receive adequate treatment. The Palestine Red Crescent are able to respond to needs in emergency situations throughout the Gaza Strip.
Activities carried out by the project partner to achieve this include:
¢ facilitating ambulance movements and evacuation of the wounded and reporting impediments to the parties concerned
¢ the supply and transport of a wide variety of medical and pharmaceutical goods and equipment to hospitals, medical stores and ambulances
The total amount of the Appeal is approx. 67 mio CHF, equivalent to approx. 45 mio EUR at the time of issuing this agreement.
