Starting from March 2012, LIGHT FOR THE WORLD together with the Austrian Development Cooperation has supported a humanitarian response in the two dioceses of Kaya and Koupela. During this phase, the situation in these dioceses could be improved through distribution of food aid for free for over 800 households. 250 children between 0 and 5 years received medical assistance and treatment for malnutrition. 150 households benefited from cash transfer for cattle and food stock and vouchers for seeds, fertilizer and tools. In total up to now 6.022 people could be helped.

However, the OCADES midterm-assessment of the first phase in September 2012 has identified gaps and urgent additional needs, both referring to the activities as well as to the geographical scope. While the global project aim “to increase the present and future ability of vulnerable households to deal with food shortages and crises and increase their food security” will stay the same, in this additional proposal, the dioceses of Fada N’Gourma, Ouagadougou and Tenkodogo will be added to the project region.

This proposed addition to the first humanitarian response will reach another additional 8.020 vulnerable people (among them at least 1.203 persons with disabilities) living in 1.350 households at risk of malnutrition, which might cause disabilities and other famine related diseases. The intervention aims to reach the following results:

Result 1: 1000 vulnerable households (including 150 households with persons with disability) improved their food security and balanced diet in 5 dioceses through off-season cultivation.

Result 2: 350 vulnerable cattle breeding households (including 53 households with persons with disability) improved their food security in 5 dioceses.

Result 3: The project partner in the additional project dioceses (Ouagadougou, Fada N'Gourma, and Tenkodogo) improved their capacity to include persons with disabilities in emergency situations.
