Increasing the accountability of international policy-making through media scrutiny of the G8 summit 2007
Kurzbeschreibung:
Projektziel
The project aim is to support African journalists to scrutinize a major international decision making forum, namely the G8 summit taking place in Germany in June 2007. African coverage of important development issues on the G8 Africa agenda - including good governance, sustainable development, and health systems around HIV, TB and Malaria is an important part of this. There is a significant role for the media to strengthen democratic governance, increase transparency and accountability mechanisms, and enable publics in the South to exercise their political and civil rights to the same end.
The project will work with ten print and broadcast journalists from Ethiopia, Mozambique, South Africa - and Uganda - before, during and after the G8 summit in Germany. The implementing agency Panos will provide media fellowships for journalists and organise national in-country forums for journalists, policy-makers and members of civil society organisations on development issues before and after the G8. Prior to the G8 there will be a workshop in Johannesburg to provide in-depth briefings and plan the coverage that will take place during the summit. Panos will provide editorial support throughout the G8 and conduct audience research in targeted Africa countries after the summit. Feature articles and radio broadcasts on key G8 agenda issues will target local and national African audiences and appropriate stories be recast for international ones, providing access to African perspectives. This breadth and depth of activities is designed to provide a coherent and sustainable process of support in line with Panos¿ ongoing work with the media in developing countries.
