Hintergrundinformation

Burkina Faso is a landlocked Sahelian country with a particularly arid climate where droughts and famines occur at an increasing rate, imposing challenging living conditions on population. The security crisis initiated in 2015 by armed factions has resulted in an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. As of 2023, 4.7 million people are in need of humanitarian aid and more than 2 million are internally displaced, over 82% of whom being women and children. The provinces of Mouhoun and Balé are amongst the most impacted by this crisis with one of the largest numbers of internally displaces persons (IDPs) and people in need of acute food assistance. Moreover, the massive influx of IDPs added pressure on existing, insufficient, and already failing water points, creating tensions with host populations and heightening protection risks for women and children. Attacks on water points created a water shortage which worsened mortality related to waterborne diseases, malnutrition, and food insecurity. Access to water, hygiene and sanitation has deteriorated sharply, resulting in 3.2 million people in urgent need of WASH assistance. Moreover, in conflict-affected areas, actors have identified an increasing number of protection incidents and human rights violations. These incidents increase the risk of GBV for women and girls, heighten feelings of insecurity and restrict access to GBV services for those in need.
