NEXUS - Promoting Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in SEE through the use of Nexus approach

Projektträger: MIO-ECSDE - Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development Land: Europe, regional/multi-country Fördersumme: € 1.500.000,00 Beginn: 01.11.2016 Ende: 31.08.2022

Kurzbeschreibung:

Projektziel

The overall objective of the project is to enhance integrated natural resources management and transboundary cooperation in this regard, as means towards sustainable development in the SEE2020 area. The project’s purpose is to introduce the Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems Nexus approach and catalyse action for its adoption and implementation in the SEE2020 area, at the national and transboundary basin levels.

Erwartete Ergebnisse

The project aims at developing the capacities of institutions and stakeholders regarding the Nexus approach and at raising awareness regarding the SEE2020 strategy and its results. Moreover, the level of integration among Nexus sectors in the SEE2020 countries is identified and based on this a regional SEE2020 strategy/roadmap for the introduction of Nexus approach considerations in the basin/aquifer management frameworks is developed and discussed at SEE22020 level. Sectoral characteristics, key inter-sectoral/transboundary linkages/benefits/trade-offs and related priority issues in the country and transboundary basins that the project focuses on are identified and/or quantified as appropriate, resulting in concrete steps and actions for the incorporation of the Nexus approach in policy formulation and decision making for natural resources management. Furthermore, the project will also create the conditions for financing actions and equality between genders regarding the project’s implementation and access to its outcomes is enabled.

Zielgruppe

The direct beneficiaries of this project comprise 1040 people from 350 institutions which are responsible for the management of resources related to the Nexus approach i.e. water, land, energy and ecosystems in the SEE2020 area. These institutions benefit in their daily work of the outputs (Nexus mapping study, Nexus assessments etc.) and results of the project and in addition, the capacities of the officials in the sphere of integrated management of water, energy, land and ecosystems will be improved. The indirect beneficiaries are the total of the population of the country where the national dialogue will be implemented and the total of the population of the two transboundary basins where the two transboundary dialogues will be implemented -especially the poor part of the population- who will benefit of the improved Nexus related resources management planning.

Maßnahmen

The strategy of the project to achieve the expected results is to introduce the Nexus approach to the ministries responsible for and the stakeholders related to the nexus sectors, facilitate action for its adoption and identify those interventions that will enable water, food, and energy security without jeopardising the well-being of the ecosystems. In this regard, activities at three levels (regional, transboundary and national) will be implemented regarding the introduction of the Nexus approach, explaining the Nexus approach tools and their usage, identifying the interlinkages among the Nexus sectors as well as the related trade-offs and benefits while making sure that the views and knowledge of all stakeholder groups, including those that may be marginalized due to social and economic reasons, are fully taken into consideration.

Hintergrundinformation

The SEE2020 countries have fair economic development needs; they are projected to become net energy importers in the coming years. Actions to cover these needs lead to pressures on natural resources resulting in the deterioration of quality of water, land and ecosystems. Additional water needs due to increased irrigation requirements is predicted, while inadequately controlled abstraction for a range of uses and urban and industrial pollution, poses risks to water quality and dependent ecosystems. On the reverse side of the coin, there is lack of enough water or water of adequate quality for all uses as well as uneven distribution or resources in space and time.
