Hintergrundinformation

Palabek refugee settlement is the newest settlement and continuously receiving refugees from the ongoing conflicts in the region, mainly from South Sudan. Humanitarian assistance is currently facing challenges, especially due to the current higher prices of commodities, affecting food security and protection services for those in need in the settlement and host community. The main identified challenges include: (1) poor harvests in recent years due to longer dry periods; secondary effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, high fuel/transportation prices has led to rising prices of basic food and essential non-food items, which has significantly constrained poor households’ access to food; (2) women and children (81% of the refugee population) are most affected by acute malnutrition and generally lack access to basic rights and services, especially young children and pregnant and lactating women; (3) Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) as well as patriarchal norms, are a barrier to the improvement of women and girls’ lives, among host communities and refugee populations. Among those affected the most in the refugee settlement are persons with disabilities, especially women and girls with disabilities.
