SEEDLING - Einführung der Nachhaltigen Entwicklungsziele der UN in den Schulen Südosteuropas
The project aims to strengthen education, capacity building and awareness raising on the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in SEE countries by incorporating them into national school curricula and by means of regional cooperation and networking among decision makers, educators and teachers. Moldova is included in the project, with the aim of transferring knowledge and experience to the country from the SEE region.
Specifically, the purpose of the project is to build the capacities and skills of relevant institutions, teachers and students towards an understanding of the new SDGs and their introduction into the on-going educational reform process in the coming period, and to enhance cross-border cooperation between institutions in the field of education for sustainable development (ESD).
The main results of the project are the following:
1. Institutional strengthening and support to national and international institutional networking achieved;
2. An online tool developed and capacity for teachers and educators built;
3. SD-based job creation opportunities for students in secondary schools and VET institutes increased.
The project will directly involve around 70 policy makers/legislators from ministries of education and other relevant educational institutions in the 7 beneficiary countries, and approximately 700 experts, educators, teachers and students in secondary education. Bearing in mind the number of secondary schools and vocational education and training (VET) schools in the target countries (over 1,000 schools and 470,000 students), as well as the potential involvement of families and the general public, the project will have an extremely wide outreach.
The proposed project will implement these priorities by working in cooperation with national institutions and NGOs to promote ESD policy; developing/upgrading multimedia ESD tools and organising training programmes for educators and NGO activists; and supporting ESD in society via activities organised I partnership with NGOs and secondary and VET schools in the region. In addition, working groups of key stakeholders will be organised at national level; conferences on good practice examples will be organised at regional level; and awareness will be raised through the participation of the media in sustainable development–based job creation pilot projects.
Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro and Serbia face similar difficulties in the process of reforming their educational systems. Institutional weakness and poor coordination mechanisms are still an issue. This, coupled with poverty and economic and political instability in South Eastern Europe (SEE), reduces the potential for the rapid introduction of quality reforms in the area of education. While the concept of sustainable development is recognised, very few tools, if any, exist to ensure that it is addressed in the educational system.
