Strengthening the Capacity of Civil Society Organizations in Africa to Combat Corruption and Contribute to the UNCAC Review Process
Kurzbeschreibung:
Projektziel
The project 'Strengthening the Capacity of Civil Society Organizations in Africa to Combat Corruption and Contribute to the UNCAC Review Process' will be implemented by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). UNODC will cooperate within this project mainly with the UNCAC Coalition, which is an NGO Coalition accompagning the worldwide implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). The Transparency International-Secretariat acts as Secretariat to the UNCAC Coalition and will therefore also assume responsibilities within the project implementation. The intervention will focus on the African continent.
The project provides unique opportunities for bolstering the capacity and engagement of civil society to increase transparency and promote active participation in government decision-making processes as envisaged by Article 13 of the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). By raising awareness about the UNCAC, delivering training to African CSOs on the review mechanism and supporting CSO engagement with governments, the project will increase CSO understanding of the Convention and enable them to promote its implementation at local, national, regional, and global levels. The project purpose is outlined through the following three individual outcomes:
Outcome 1: Increased CSO knowledge of the UNCAC and its review mechanism and ability to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing peer review;
Outcome 2: Increased dialogue between CSOs and their government focal points;
Outcome 3: CSOs gain skills to work closely with the private sector in the UNCAC review mechanism.
Direct Beneficiaries of this project are 85-95 African NGOs from those countries, which are included in the UNCAC review meachnism until 2014 – some of which members of the UNCAC Coalition - active in good governance and anti-corruption. Indirect Beneficiaries are other African CSOs targeted by outreach efforts and the wider public.
