Support to Capacity Building for Enhanced Peace and Security in the ECOWAS Region

The project is a contribution to sustainable peace, security and development in West Africa. Peace and human security will be strengthened by building capacities within the ECOWAS and their Standby Forces (ESF) concerning the civil component in crises management. It is coordinated by the Austrian Study Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ASPR) and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Ghana as one of the three Centres of Excellence of the ECOWAS.
Austria’s applies thereby a whole of government approach linking resources of the Austrian Development Cooperation and the Austrian Ministry of Defense and Sport who will complete the project by seconding an expert as course director to the KAIPTC.
The project has two main components:
1) Development of two training courses regarding (a) humanitarian assistance with a focus on civil-military relations and (b) the link between sustainable natural resource management and conflict. The courses will provide participants with sufficient knowledge to manage natural resources more efficiently and effectively and to provide humanitarian assistance in a context of improved civil-military coordination and relations. After a pilot phase the courses will be reviewed and integrated into the KAIPTC course program.
2) Joint Research activities and two publications on the thematic topics of the two trainings.
Target group for the trainings will consist of civilians (experts, diplomats, decision-makers, economists, researchers, etc.), police and military affiliated professionals, with a particular focus on civilian personnel and civil society organizations.
