Support to the judiciary of Bhutan 2009-2013
Under the initiative of the GNH Commission, the Royal Government of Bhutan together with Austria, Denmark, UNDP and UNCDF have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in support of a partnership for Good Governance in 2008. This MoU is intended to increase harmonization of the partner's activities as well as aligning their activities to national priorities described in Bhutan's 10th Five Year Plan.
The overall goal of this project is to ensure equal access to conventient, timely and equitable judicial services. This goal will be reached by
1. training judicial and administrative staff as well as judges (inside the country as well as abroad).
2. Sustainability of these training measures will be ensured by applying ToT methods (Training of Trainers) as well as funding a Judicial Training Academy.
3. Furthermore physical access to justice will be improved by by building, equipping and inaugurating district courts in Bumthang and in Trongsa.
The project is jointly financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC (CHF 2.5 million), the Austrian Development Agency ADA (EUR 1 million = CHF 1.5 million) and the Royal Government of Bhutan (BTN 17 million = CHF 400,000).
