Support to the Repatriation Process in South Sudan, Mine Risk Education Team
Kurzbeschreibung:
Projektziel
Following the recent civil war in Sudan, landmines and unexploded ordnances (UXO) continue to present a significant menance, threatening the movements of displaced population and hampering humanitarian actvities. Against this backdrop, UNHDR requires a dedicated Emergency Survey capacity for explosive remnants of war (EWR) that is able to conduct the survey of way stations, returnee routes and areas of return in order to ensure that the requisite danger area information is available prior to the return of refugees and IDPs into given targeted areas.
In continuation of the former project (ending June 2007), 1 Mobile Emergency Survey team, which will be equipped and financed through this project, will have the capacity to conduct the 'Spot Clearance' of ERW in order to remove the immediate threat to life and limb that these items can present. This team will be working together with 4 other MRE teams (financed trhough UNHCR) and 3 survey/EOD - ordenance disposal operations - financed through UNHCR and ECHO.
The beneficiaries of the project will principally be refugees and IDPs currently within the anticipated project area in South Sudan. The traget groups for MRE and Community Liason will primarily be woman and children due to the fact that woman most often will go for fire wood, or farm land, while children often tend to pick up objects lying on the ground. The teams will reach 3,000 people directly with MRE and 6,000 with community liason - this will have an indirect impact of 20,000 individuals.
