Support to UNHCR's Humanitarian Response to the New Influx of Somali Refugees in Northern Kenya and to the Flooding of the Dadaab Refugee Complex
Kurzbeschreibung:
Projektziel
Kenya has been home to Somali refugees since 1991. The majority of refugees are encamped in Dadaab in Garissa District, although many thousands have moved spontaneously to Nairobi over the last 15 years. There are currently 161,000 registered refugees in Dadaab. Both UNHCR and the World Food Programme (WFP) have been involved in a long-term care and maintenance programme for the refugee population.
The deteriorating security situation in Somalia has forced many thousands of people to seek asylum in Kenya, following the rapid expansion of control of territory by the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC). This situation has raised serious concerns of a large influx in neighboring countries, notably in Ethiopia and Kenya.
So far, some 34,000 Somali refugees have newly arrived in Kenya since the beginning of 2006; UNHCR is preparing assistance for up to 50,000 new Somali refugees in total. In addition, up to one third of the Dadaab complex has been affected by torrential rainfalls in mid-November 2006.
The Austrian contribution will help to fund UNHCR's emergency programme by covering activities in the field of international protection and in humanitarian assistance for newly arriving Somali refugees in Kenya as well as for refugees affected by the flooding of the Dadaab refugee camp complex. Humanitarian aid will take place in the sectors of emergency food aid, emergency shelter, emergency health and domestic needs, and water/sanitation.
