Projektziel

The overall objective of the project is to save lives, reduce malnutrition and protect communities’ livelihoods, thus promoting stability and contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) objectives linked to zero hunger, gender equality and protection in Burkina Faso. Implemented under the framework of the double nexus, activities will contribute to the following SDGs: SDG 1 (eradication of poverty); SDG 2 (end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition); SDG 5 (gender equality and empowerment of women and girls), SDG 16 (peace and justice) and SDG 17 (partnerships).

Erwartete Ergebnisse

Targeted households and individuals have an improved and adequate access to food to meet their immediate and longer-term needs.

Zielgruppe

With the Austrian contribution, World Food Program (WFP) will provide assistance to vulnerable families in Burkina Faso, namely in the regions Boucle du Mouhoun, Centre-Nord, Nord, and Sahel. WFP will assist over 60,500 beneficiaries through this project, in particular internally displaced people (IDPs) and communities hosting displaced populations.

Maßnahmen

1: General food assistance to displaced populations and host-families. 17,750 beneficiaries.

2: Resilience-building / early recovery targeting IDPs, including returnees, and host-families. 5,250 beneficiaries: 750 IDPs and households of communities hosting displaced populations (i.e. host-families).

3: Emergency-school feeding activities targeting displaced and host-community children. 12,500 beneficiaries.

4: Nutritional support for the prevention of malnutrition for pregnant and lactating women and for the treatment of malnutrition to children aged 6-59 months. Beneficiaries: 20,000 pregnant and lactating women and 5,000 children aged 6-59 months.

Hintergrundinformation

In Burkina Faso, the expansion and intensification of activities of non-state armed groups, exploiting pre-existing inter-communal tensions, has led to massive displacement of populations and had a severe impact on an already vulnerable population.

As of 30 September 2021, over 1.4 million persons, of which the majority are women and children, have been displaced with new displacements reported daily. The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance has increased from 2.2 million in 2020 to 3.5 million in 2021. Due to insecurity, some 892,000 people have been impacted by the closure or limited operations of health services, and over 305,000 children have been deprived of education due to the closure of over 2,200 schools. COVID-19 adds another layer of vulnerability, with widespread movement restrictions and disruption on local economies and supply chains, making individuals more prone to shocks and de-facto more vulnerable.

The action will be in line with the Humanitarian Response Plan, specifically under the Food Security, Nutrition and Education Clusters. To avoid duplication of assistance or gaps, WFP will coordinate the response through the Food Security Cluster, who coordinates the food security related response in the country. WFP’s efforts to combining emergency and resilience building in the same targeted areas will ensure that households have adequate capacity to cope with shocks. In addition, it would foster social cohesion by easing the tension linked to the lack of productive land, since emergency assistance may be considered as a source of additional income during the rainy season by compensation for greater access to land. Furthermore, a similar exercise will be ensured with the other Clusters.

This support is the second financial support to the WFP Burkina Faso Country Strategic Plan 2019-2023 after a first support in 2019 (EUR 821,901.00 ADA contribution to project 2339-00/2019).
