Sustainable Sanitation - Kitgum, Northern Uganda
Kurzbeschreibung:
Projektziel
The project objective is to improve sanitation (defined as management of human excreta) in
Kitgum.
This is achieved by creating additional demand for sanitation and by establishing a sanitation service chain to tend to this newly created demand.
Demand for sanitation is created by applying a social marketing approach. The project identifies appropriate “sanitation products”, makes them available as well as affordable and promotes them in Kitgum town with a population of 60,000 ultimate beneficiaries.
“Sanitation products” are defined as all required services along a sanitation service chain – from design to construction and operation and maintenance. To make sure that appropriate products are available the project supports private sector actors in technical and entrepreneurial aspects. More than 30 companies directly benefit from trainings.
Lastly this approach is complemented by eliminating a final hindrance on the way to improved sanitation which is the financing capacity of users (potentially the entire adult population of Kitgum town) and service providers. This is achieved by providing access to loans for sanitation investments for users and service providers.
