UP Khoj-Boxes - Hands-on Science Learning Wissensboxen
The project engages in the development, production and global marketing of low-cost, tailor-made hands-on science communication materials for formal and non-formal educational use. It is part of a self-sustained social entrepreneurship project in co-operation with young people and women from rural areas in Gujarat, India, and local initiatives within an international and national network of research organizations and universities.
90 business units will be established through the project, thus creating at least six full-time equivalents (not counting the social business itself). 800 beneficiaries will be reached through workshops, training, and inclusion into the Khoj boxes value chain. At least 30,000 young people, women and children (two per box) will benefit from 15,000 hands-on science learning boxes and deepen their understanding of science.
The leading idea behind Vienna University Children’s Office is to widen access to education, promote inquiry based learning and raise awareness for the fascination of science for children and young people. Raising awareness for science needs a deep knowledge of research and scientific thinking and a strong link to researchers. However, it also needs know-how on the needs of children in our society, the most challenging group of consumers. All the social units mentioned under the project will require special skills. Members working under the social units need specific skill development trainings and trainings on systems of management, organization and production.
To reach the goal, the partners will
a. develop prototypes of environmentally friendly hands-on science learning boxes with support of several international level research institutes and universities;
b. implement them through and in support of locally sustainable social enterprises;
c. adapt and refine the current Khoj-box business model with stakeholder engagement;
d. promote innovation and science by means of Khoj-Boxes on an international level for a global roll-out;
e. create online learning tools and training workshops for the use and implementation of Khoj-boxes, together with the sourcing, assembling and distribution.
The project was submitted in the framework of the Social Entrepreneurship Challenge 2015.
