Wiederansiedlung vertriebener Bevölkerung im Distrikt Kapchorwa/ Promoting Rainwater Harvesting Technology in Kapchorwa District
Kurzbeschreibung:
Projektziel
During the last decade the Government of Austria financed a resettlement project in Ngenge sub-county: 'Infrastructure Support for the Resettlement of Displaced Residents of Ngenge Sub-County; Housing Assistance Programme'. One of the main activities was to provide corrugated iron sheets for roofing (about 3,000 households) to resettled beneficiaries. With their own funds and contribution in kind, the beneficiaries managed to construct decent houses by starting simultaneously farming and income generating activities. Still, the availability of drinking water is a huge problem. This project is a logical continuation of the current project with the overall objective being to improve the living standards of rural communities within Kapchorwa District. The project is focusing on the implementation of· rainwater harvesting systems using the existing iron sheeted roofs · eco-sanitation.Appropriate living conditions also support peace and conflict prevention initiatives within a region, affected by cattle rustling. The resources will be used mainly (1) to strengthen the formerly displaced residents and to improve their living conditions/incomes; (2) to train the people in construction and maintenance of 5.000 litre water tanks on household level made from compressed cemented stabilized soil blocks (SSB); (3) to create awareness for improved health through access to improved drinking water quality; (4) to introduce appropriate technologies.
