Im Zuge der Unterzeichnung des Friedensvertrages am 29.12.1996 wurde das Recht der indianischen Bevölkerung auf ihre kulturelle Eigenständigkeit schriftlich festgelegt. Die Regierung hat sich verpflichtet, zweisprachige schulische Erziehung in den indianischen Gebieten zu ermöglichen.

Es entstanden vielerorts private Initiativen zur Errichtung bilingualer Schulen, da das Vertrauen der Bevölkerung in die Versprechungen der Regierung erfahrungsgemäß gering ist.

Im Sprachgebiet der Tzútujiiles ergriff die "Asociacion La Voz de Atitlán" (Radio Atitlán) diese Initiative. Im November und Dezember 1996 wurde eine bilinguale Ferienschule für 8-13jährige eingerichtet, 1997 wurde sie als "Samstagsschule" weitergeführt und gleichzeitig mit einer sechsjährigen Grundschule begonnen. Im Laufe der letzten Jahre wurde diese erweitert und ausgebaut. Neben dem üblichen Unterricht erwerben die Schüler vertiefendes Wissen über ihre eigene Kultur, Sprache und handwerkliche Fähigkeiten, über Gesundheits- und Umwelterziehung sowie politische Bildung. Zur Zeit gibt es 8 Grundschulklassen, die zum Teil in winzigen Büroräumen von Radio Atitlán untergebracht wurden.

Im Jahre 1999 wurde diese bilinguale Schule öffentlich anerkannt.

Durch eine "Bausteinaktion" in Schulen und Institutionen in Österreich, durch private Spenden sowie durch Förderungen öffentlicher Einrichtungen konnte mit dem Schulbau begonnen werden. Bisher wurden 8 Klassenzimmer und eine Küche errichtet. Im Herbst 2003 werden eine Direktion, Lehrerzimmer, EDV-Raum und Toiletten im 1.Stock gebaut.

Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt des Projekts ist die Lehrerfortbildung und die Ausbildung von Multiplikatoren in Ernährungs-, Hygiene- und Gesundheitsbelangen vor Ort.

Weitere notwendige Bauarbeiten: Verputz von 6 Klassen, Ausbau Küche und Toiletten, Schulmöbel, Einrichtung des EDV-Raumes.
