Context

South Sudan faces various challenges, from climate change and continuing violent conflicts to economic crisis and now the Sudan crisis. 9.4 million people will be in need of humanitarian assistance in 2023 (76% of the population) which includes 1.9 million IDPs, 1.4 million returnees, 5.8 million host community members and 337,000 refugees. The main challenges are:

1) Food insecurity and lack of livelihoods: An estimated 7.8 million people are likely to experience severe food insecurity due to multiple years livelihood erosion, combined with the lack of resources to support the recent influx of South Sudanese returnees and conflict-related disruption to trade flows and llack of market access;

2) WASH: Around 60% of HH in South Sudan use unimproved water sources putting them at risk of waterborne diseases. Only 10% of the population have access to improved sanitation and 75% practice open defecation;

3) Protection & SGBV: Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) is a significant and concerning issue in South Sudan. An estimated 2.8 million people, with a majority being women and girls, are facing GBV in the country, including rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, child marriage, forced marriage, and other harmful practices. There is a lack of survivor centered GBV services including a lack of women and girls’ safe spaces.
