Bosnia-Herzegovina is one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world and the most mine-contaminated country in South-Eastern Europe. The presence of anti-personnel landmines and unexploded ordnances (UXO) is still, and will be for many years, a major issue not only for the reconstruction of the country, but also for its economic development and the overall security of its inhabitants.

The Austrian Development Cooperation has been supporting demining activities in Bosnia-Herzegovina for several years. This project constitues a continuation of this support.

The objectives of the project are:

¢ to demine a total of 216.626 square meters of agricultural, industrial and resettlement areas in municipalities Krupa na Uni and Bratunac in Republika Srpska as well as in municipalities Donji Vakuf, Bogojno and Bogosca in the Federation of BiH;

¢ to demine through operations of technical survey an additional 79.834 square meters in the municipalites Bratunac and Velika Kladusa.

Out of all the demining projects there are seven with a total surface area of 180.898 square meters where cluster ammunition is expected to be found.

¢ Some of the demining in the municipality of Bratunac is aimed at enabling the Commission of missing persons to access the locations.

The direct target groups of the project are:

¢ Internally displaced persons and refugees that will be able to return and reintegrate into the municipalities mentioned above.

¢ Communities in mine affected areas benefiting from the demining of the social/economic infrastructure.
