Contribution to Federation Emergency Appeal: Iraq Population Movement
Kurzbeschreibung:
Projektziel
As a result of the early August 2014 violence, the region of northern Iraq has seen escalated insecurity and a significant deterioration in the humanitarian situation. The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in an estimated 2.1 million internally displaced persons in central and northern Iraq and left an estimated 5.2 million people in need of assistance in Iraq.
Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Principals have declared a Level 3 emergency which is only applied for exceptional circumstances. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has appealed for a total of CHF 6,4 million (approx. EUR 5,3 m) to deliver assistance to some 180.000 people until the end of the year. The Austrian contribution will contribute to the assistance of approx. 10200 internally displaced persons. The objective of the project is to support displaced people in the following sectors :
1. Water, sanitation and hygiene promotion (procure, pre-stock and distribute hygiene kits and jerry cans and conduct hygiene promotion activities)
2. Shelter & settlement (procure, pre-stock and distribute essential non food items as needed)
3. Food security, nutrition and livelihoods (procure, pre-stock and distribute non-perishable food in monthly increments for distribution as required)
4. Disaster preparedness and risk reduction (conduct relief and logistics training for staff and volunteers as required, conduct basic/rapid needs assessment training/refreshers for national disaster response teams as required)
As outlined above, the main strategy at present, is in line with the capacity of the Iraq Red Crescent Society and is complementary to the work of other actors. This is to focus on the pre-positioning of food and non-food assistance.
The pre-positioned items would include:
Household package for a family (blankets, kitchen set, hygiene kit, etc.)
Food basket for a family (rice, tea, sugar, lentil, etc.)
