Projektziel

The overall goal of the project is to contribute to maintaining and rebuilding the lives and health of drought-affected people in Oromia Region, Ethiopia.

Erwartete Ergebnisse

The expected results of the intervention are:

1) 537 households (3,490 people) have equitable access to and use water, sanitation and hygiene resources and facilities.

2) 1.275 mothers or caregivers of undernourished children, as well as pregnant and lactating women have timely and appropriate access to nutritional support for their children and/or for their own needs.

3) The agricultural production of 6.510 households (approx. 42,315 individuals) is rehabilitated and their resilience towards future shocks (e.g. droughts) is strengthened

Zielgruppe

The project shall be implemented in 2 drought-affected woredas (districts) within the Oromia region: Ziway-Dugda and Adamitulu. the project targets 6,510 households, which corresponds to 42,315 individuals (on average 6,5 persons per HH) which are almost 83% of the total population of the targeted villages.

This total number of targeted (direct) beneficiaries can be disaggregated into: a) 537 drought-affected households with severely hampered access to adequate safe drinking water sources. b) 600 children under the age of 5 suffering from moderate or severe acute malnutrition and 675 pregnant and lactating mothers, in total 1.275 individuals. c) 6.510 drought-affected farmer households with eroded livelihood assets such as seed and livestock of which 5.790 HHs will receive seed support and 720 will receive livestock assets (sheeps/goats); out of this group, 300 interested farmer households will receive training and materials in sustainable agricultural practices.

Beneficiaries are thus at least 6.510 HH overall, but very likely there will be more, as there will partially be overlaps between the different beneficiary groups. Currently, all targeted beneficiaries fall into the most vulnerable population group. The project will be implemented with Caritas Austria’s local partner Ethiopian Catholic Church – Social Development Coordinating Office of Meki.

Maßnahmen

The project impact shall be achieved by implementing the following activity clusters: a) rehabilitation of the existing water sources and distribution systems, by addressing essential sanitation gaps identified, and by training on hygiene and sanitation; b) providing children and pregnant & lactating women with nutrient supplements and by giving trainings on infant/child nutrition; c) laying the basis for restored livelihoods of drought-affected farmers through seed supply, animal restocking and introducing sustainable agricultural methods.

Hintergrundinformation

The current drought in Ethiopia is the worst in 30 years according to the United Nations, resulting in acute food insecurity, malnutrition and devastated livelihoods. The cause of this drought lies in failed spring rains and the arrival of the El Niño phenomenon already in 2015, which weakened summer rains usually feeding 80-85% per cent of Ethiopia.
