Short Description:

Overall goal

The eastern and southern part of Ethiopia is badly hit by the current drought. The situation worsened when thousands of refugees from Somalia crossed the border to Ethiopia in search of food. In cooperation with others donors who undertook the provision of water and livestock LIGHT FOR THE WORLD has decided to support the distribution of supplementary food and provision of medication for those people, who are predominantly affected by the famine.

Together with two local project partners LIGHT FOR THE WORLD has developed an initiative with the project objective to prevent hunger and severe malnutrition to the drought effected people in Somali Region and Borana Zone by focusing on children, pregnant women, lactating mothers and people with disabilities.

The target group is the same in both project areas: semi-nomadic pastoralists. In total the project aims to reach 22.700 vulnerable people at risk of malnutrition that might cause disabilities and other famine related illnesses.

The results the project aims to achieve are:

• A total of 9,250 children under the age of five 2,850 pregnant and lactating mothers, 1,400 persons with disability including children with disabilities (CWDs) and 700 elderly people (all together 14.200 persons) have received supplementary food in the two districts of Charati and Hargalle in Somali Region.

• In Borana, a total of 1.800 children under the age of five, 1.100 pregnant and lactating mothers, 3.300 school children and 2.300 persons with disabilities (all together 8.500 persons) have received supplementary food in the two districts of Yabello and Moyale.

• Also in Borana, 15,000 beneficiaries including persons with disabilities have received treatment in the existing health institutions with emergency drugs.

• The importance of including people with disabilities in Humanitarian Aid Measures has been taken into account by the project partners and other mainstream stakeholders.
