Context

The Deyr/Hagaya rains of 2016 were far below average, followed by another poor rain performance during the main spring rain Gu/Ganna rain. In the largely pastoralists areas of Borena and Somali, large numbers of livestock death were report. According to the agriculture cluster report by May 2017 35% of livestock have died within the region. On average households lost 40% of their livestock, with poorer households losing everything they had. Among the surviving animals, reports suggest that many animals have lost their cash value due to their weakened body conditions.

The humanitarian requirement document (HRD) published in January 2017, indicates that this year, there will be 303,000 cases of children under five affected by severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and 2.7 million cases of moderate acute malnutrition (MAM). 9.2 million people are in need of emergency WASH services and 4.4 million people will be affected by disease outbreak.
