Projects
Reconstruction of UNRWA Health Centre
Short Description:
Overall goal
This project takes place within the framework of Austrian support to Palestinian refugees through UNRWA.
According to its mandate, UNRWA provides Palestine refugees with essential primary health care. Upgrading and expanding of UNRWA's treatment facilities is one of UNRWA Health Department priorities.
The health centre to be reconstructed under the project is located in Dera'a Refugee Camp in Syria.
Dera'a camp is located 100 KM south of Damascus, with a total population of about 11,650. Health services are delivered to Palestine refugees in old and disorganized premises with lack of sufficient space to accommodate basic services. The present Health Centre cannot absorb the patient flow and cope with the growth of user population and the expansion of services.
Repeated maintenance work were undertaken in the past few years. According to UNRWA's technical department, the building cannot be further renovated and expansion cannot be made at economic cost due to the deteriorating design of the building. The only solution to improve health care infrastructures in Dera'a camp is to demolish the Centre and to reconstruct a new one on the same site.
The reconstructed health Centre will provide sufficient space to accommodate the different health services and will ensure a better working environment for the staff and more importantly to provide quality health care for the Palestine refugees.
