Reduction of vulnerability to climate related disasters on community level - Ethiopia
Short Description:
Overall goal
The availability of water and the quality of water resources will be affected by climate change, particularly in sub-saharan Africa. Although a lot of initiatives have been started in recent years that support adaptation to climate change impacts, experiences in the water and sanitation sector are still few.
The proposed pilot project in Ethiopia is addressing this gap. It focuses on community based disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation for water and sanitation. The access to safe water and sanitation under changing and variable climate conditions will be improved and awareness with regard to hygiene and health issues raised in communities in North Gondar. About 5000 people will directly benefit. Learnings will further contribute to the institutional development of the Ethiopian and International Red Cross. The project also intends to inform regional and national DRR policies and plans in Ethiopia.
Given the focus on North Gondar the project is a valuable supplement to the Sustainable Resource Management Programme of the ADA supported Amhara National Regional State Government.
