Projektziel

Basic needs which vulnerable people affected by conflict and other situations of violence have in regard to food and nutrition, water and sanitation and quality health-care services are covered.

Erwartete Ergebnisse

The ICRC aims to achieve the following results per its Assistance sub-Programme in Ethiopia:

• Access to water and/or sanitation facilities for 37,000 people is provided

• Dietary, livestock and other basic needs gap for 96,000 vulnerable people are reduced.

Zielgruppe

With a contribution of EUR 901’240,67, the ICRC can reach a total of 34,595 people with the following results:

• Access to water and sanitation facilities for 16’950 vulnerable people is improved.

• Dietary, livestock and other basic needs situations of 17’645 vulnerable people is improved, with basic needs including non-food items, schooling and health.

The ICRC implements its activities in close collaboration with the Ethiopian Red Cross; key geographic areas are Addis Abeba, Mekele and Somali Regional State.

Maßnahmen

Activities under the Austrian grant include:

- in the area of water, sanitation and Hygiene:

- repair or install water points in rural areas serving up to 16,950 people

- hold training sessions on project management for regional water authorities, and provide them with tools and equipment to maintain water-supply systems

- in the area of covering basic needs:

- Provide household items or cash for up to 2,545 households, including victims of sexual violence

- Provide seeds and tools for up to 5,000 farming households

- Provide medicines and equipment to vaccinate and treat livestock of up to 10,000 pastoralist Households

- Offer up to 100 vulnerable households cash grants and training to start or resume small business.

Hintergrundinformation

Communal and political tensions persist in certain regions – such as Oromia, Gambella and Amhara. Ethiopia reportedly hosts around 920,000 refugees who have fled instability and violence in neighbouring countries, particularly Eritrea, South Sudan and Somalia. Violent clashes between State forces and an armed group known as the Oromo Liberation Army occur in parts of the region of Oromia, particularly near its border with Benishangul-Gumuz in western Ethiopia. Increased ethnic tensions, and disputes over resources or territory, often lead to fighting, notably in the eastern part of the country along Oromia’s border with the Somali Regional State (SRS), and within Amhara in the north-west. The ICRC is the actor having access to nearly all geographical areas and stakeholders.
