Projektträger: WFP - World Food Programme Land: Ethiopia Fördersumme: € 500.000,00 Beginn: 01.01.2018 Ende: 30.06.2018

Kurzbeschreibung:

Projektziel

The overall objective of the Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation (PRRO) of the WFP in Ethiopia is to address structural food insecurity and malnutrition among people living in disaster-prone areas. The specific objective is to provide short-term food assistance for households in periods of acute emergency stress and to address moderate acute malnutrition among children under five and pregnant and lactating women.

Erwartete Ergebnisse

The Austrian contribution is expected to contribute to the treatment of moderate acute malnutrition in children and pregnant and lactating women in the emergency affected areas. With the Austrian contribution, WFP will procure 376 tonnes of Super Cereal Plus (a corn soya blend to be used as a complement to breastfeeding) which will cover the needs of 28,225 moderately malnourished children and 27,597 pregnant and lactating women for a period of one-month ration.

Zielgruppe

WFP is working with the Regional Disaster Risk Management Commission and regional health bureaus as well as NGO’s in the implementation of the targeted supplementary feeding programme. The government is responsible for the transportation of commodities, distribution and monitoring of the activity, NGOs are involved in the distribution, screening and nutritional follow up and reporting of beneficiaries. With the Austrian contribution, 28,225 moderately malnourished children and 27,597 pregnant and lactating women will be targeted with short-term food assistance. WFP’s activities will be implemented mainly in the South-Eastern part of the country, specifically in the Somali Region.

Maßnahmen

WFP will distribute Super Cereal Plus to malnourished children and pregnant and lactating women identified as malnourished through community level screening conducted by health and NGO partners. The Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation is providing unconditional relief assistance to address seasonal food shortages. Relief assistance aims to meet the immediate food needs of populations facing climate shocks, conflict and high food prices.

Hintergrundinformation

The worsening nutrition and food security situation in Ethiopia is manifested by the increasing admission in the nutrition programs particularly in Somali region. Weather forecasts in early 2018 present a high probability that the spring performance will again be erratic and underperform in southern and southeastern Ethiopia in 2018. Given the increasing population vulnerability after three years of drought, life-saving assistance in particular for conflict displaced populations around the border areas of Somali and Oromia needs to be urgently scaled-up, whilst partners also engage on the Government-led efforts to ensure durable solutions for this group such as voluntary return, resettlement or integration. With the conflict between the Somali’s and Oromo’s affecting availability of supplies in the market and movement restriction, this is resulting in an increased demand for support to the already limited resources.
