The project aims to support Palestinian refugees to be able to meet their basic needs and to cope with sudden crises.

Erwartete Ergebnisse

Strategic Priority 1: To preserve resilience through the provision of humanitarian assistance ensuring that the most vulnerable Palestine refugees meet their basic needs.

Strategic Priority 2: contribute to a protective environment for Palestine refugees by maintaining access to basic services including emergency health, Education in Emergencies, Livelihoods and Vocational Training, Protection and Environmental Health.

Strategic Priority 3: To improve the effectiveness and efficiency of emergency programme delivery through strengthened Safety and Security, Emergency Repair, Rehabilitation and Maintenance of UNRWA Installations and Coordination and Management.

ADA funding will contribute to Strategic priority 1.

Zielgruppe

With the Austrian contribution UNRWA will be able to provide three months’ worth of cash assistance to 11,590 beneficiaries.

Maßnahmen

1) Establish lists of cash assistance beneficiaries per outlets

2) Distribute cash through banks, money transfer company outlets and UNRWA facilities

3) Conduct regular follow-up with beneficiary households

4) Review cash distribution lists, ensuring all payments meet project criteria

Hintergrundinformation

Twelve years into the protracted Syrian crisis, its population continues to endure the cumulative effects of years of instability and a far-reaching economic meltdown. The first quarter of 2023 has seen the national average price of the standard reference food basket of staples increase by ten percent, reaching Syrian Pounds (SYP) 511,623 (USD 113) as of March 2023 - 75 percent higher than a year earlier and tripled since March 2021. The Minimum Expenditure Basket (MEB) for a household of five members reached SYP 1,348,451 (USD 298) in March 2023, marking an eighth consecutive monthly increase. Surging costs of both food and non-food items have kept the annual MEB rates in double figures following a series of currency devaluations, four in 12 months, fuel shortages, impact of the earthquake, crisis in Ukraine, and financial crisis in Lebanon rippling across into Syria as the two economies are closely linked. In February 2023, an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude hit southern Turkey and northwest Syria, followed by a second one of 7.5 magnitude caused significant destruction and killing thousands of people. The damage in the north of Syria, particularly in Aleppo, Latakia, Hama, is extensive. The destruction caused by the earthquake affected 43,044 Palestine refugees living in the area.
