Projektziel

The project aims at contributing to the reduction of threat of violence by armed actors against 2,4 mil children in Darfur by all relevant armed groups through organising two conferences and workshops.

Erwartete Ergebnisse

It is envisaged that (1) participating conflict parties incorporate their acquired knowledge concerning children rights in their respective organisations and (2) the UNAMID Child Protection Unit is empowered to better facilitate a dialogue between the conflict parties. These outcomes will be achieved by strengthening the acceptance for children's rights amongst the participating conflict parties, enhancing the knowledge and qualifications of participating conflict parties concerning children's rights through capacity development, and by improving and strengthening the trust between UNAMID CPU and the participating conflict parties.

Zielgruppe

The direct beneficiaries of the intervention are the 40 participants (representatives of the parties to the conflict and the UN) of the two planned conferences and workshops in Stadtschlaining at the ASPR). Indirectly, by reducing the Six Grave Violations against children, the 2,4 million children of Darfur benefit.

Maßnahmen

Two two-day conferences are planned, as well as two one-day capacity development workshops following each conference. The conferences will allow for a confidence-building exchange and creative dialogue on the experiences, plans and needs of representatives with different organisational backgrounds in a safe space. Capacity development workshops on international humanitarian law and on children in armed conflict will be organized for conference participants. Furthermore, representatives of the UNAMID CPU are supported to establish a relationship of trust with the conflicting parties.

Hintergrundinformation

The Darfur conflict in western Sudan is estimated by the UN to be responsible for the death of more than 300,000 people, as well as about 2.7 million internally displaced persons. The conflict prevents the realisation of basic rights of children in Darfur (education, housing, health, etc). In addition, the conflict and the associated migration movements pose risks to safety and security in the region as well as human security. Observers believe that sustainable peace in Darfur can only be achieved by many parallel peace processes. After numerous unsuccessful attempts, the Schlaining Darfur Conferences of 2012 and 2015 are amongst the few success stories in the peace process. The planned project is based on the achievements of these previous conferences.
