Since July 21st Pakistan has been affected by some of the worst floods it has experienced in decades, with more than 20 million people affected all across the country. One of the worst affected areas is the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), which has alone recorded 1,036 deaths. Within the province, Nowshera and Charsadda are some of the worst affected districts.

The overall project goal is to improve the humanitarian situation of the flood-affected population by providing humanitarian assistance and protection. The project objective is to help the vulnerable population have an increased access to and make use of rehabilitated drinking water facilities and follow improved hygiene practices to sustain and safeguard their lives and health.

To this end the intended results are:

- Safe drinking water is available and used. At least 50 water sources are cleaned / restored and working and 2,750 families (20,075 individuals) receive and make use of water storage kits.

- Shared / community and private sanitation facilities are rehabilitated and used. 200 latrines are rehabilitated thereby approximately 4,000 individuals have access to and use sanitation facilities.

- Hygiene practices are improved. 2,750 hygiene / household kits are distributed and used by 20,075 individuals.

- Drainage / Sanitation water channels are restored. About 4,000 meters of drainage channels are restored through engaging 675 households that receive cash for work for cleaning works.

The proposed action will benefit a total of 6000 displaced families, i.e. around 44.000 internally displaced persons but also local affected population) of Nowshera and Charsadda districts.
